3 Denture Care Recommendations

Published:

Modern dentures are more comfortable and durable than ever before when properly cared for.

Here are some tips for keeping your dentures in Winnipeg in top condition so that you may have a happier, more attractive smile for years to come.

Denture care tips:

  • Clean dentures every day
  • Handle dentures properly
  • Take out dentures every night

1. CLEAN DENTURES EVERY DAY

Brush your dentures every day in the same way you would brush your teeth, with one important exception: no toothpaste. Many commercial toothpastes can cause denture damage. Instead, brush all surfaces of the dentures with a soft-bristle denture brush (designed specifically for cleaning dentures) and water, being careful not to bend any attachments. After each meal, rinse your dentures with water. You can soak dentures in specialized denture cleaners, but soaking is not a substitute for brushing – you must brush the dentures to remove plaque.

2. HANDLE DENTURES PROPERLY

Allow your dentures to soak in cool water or a denture cleaning solution when not in use to keep them from drying out. If your dentures have metal attachments, avoid using cleaning solutions as they may cause the metal to tarnish. Dentures should not be soaked in hot water because they will warp.

3. TAKE OUT DENTURES EVERY NIGHT

Warm water or mouthwash might help release dentures from your gums while removing them. To remove your top denture, place your thumb on your front teeth and push up and out toward your nose. Using a rocking motion, carefully pull on your bottom denture to remove it. Also, removing dentures for night gives the gum tissue beneath them time to rest.
